Lighting the future with Aputure

With its knack for innovation, Aputure is leading the way in eco-conscious, quality-first film lighting, finds Katie Kasperson

Today’s filmmakers are more eco-aware than ever, with production crews taking tangible steps to reduce their carbon footprints and reach zero emissions. Largely spearheaded by environmental industry bodies such as BAFTA albert and leading manufacturers like Aputure, this movement has introduced a wave of sustainable kit across the board.

Lighting equipment has historically been guilty of guzzling energy, with diesel generators – major greenhouse gas emitters – used to power many productions. Tungsten lights and HMIs were often the preferred choice for cinematographers, known for their warmth and richness; yet these bulbs weren’t efficient from an environmental perspective either. LEDs emerged as an alternative, able to emit greater output while using less power – but until recently, they lacked the quality and colour fidelity desired by filmmakers.

Today’s LEDs look a little different, and Aputure has been at the forefront of this technological transformation. A leader in R&D, the company has made strides in sustainability and colour science with products that are not only eco-friendly, but also boast quality, accuracy and brightness. Today, Aputure offers energy-efficient fixtures and accessories like its STORM LEDs – which rely on the inventive BLAIR and BLAIR-CG light engines.

The STORM series, which includes the STORM 80c, 1000c, 1200x and new XT52, blends impressive spectral output with environmental consciousness so that filmmakers aren’t forced to make sacrifices. Besides being inherently energy-efficient with a high lumens-to-watts ratio, these LED fixtures also prioritise eco-friendliness in other ways. Their portability cuts down on transportation-related costs, while their modularity lengthens their lifespan, reducing material waste.

With products such as the STORM series, Aputure is paving the way for more eco-conscious filmmaking, with lighting systems that are not only superior in quality but also smaller in environmental impact. As sustainability grows in importance, Aputure ensures productions can meet their climate goals – no compromises necessary.
