Re-Housed Zeiss Lenses – Baby Primes

Posted on Jun 2, 2011 by Alex Fice

Baby Primes are re-housed film style lensesCinematographer Dante Cecchin started his career in 1983 and from the beginning he sought the best optics he could get, spending much of his time converting lenses to work with Betacam SP cameras as well as Bolexs and ArriFlexs.

Nearly 30 years later and with the arrival of video DSLRs and more directly the Canon EOS 5D MkII he has launched a range of re-housed film style lenses. “The arrival of the Canon 5D for me was a real dream to go full frame and enjoy the magic ‘bokeh’ of the wide angles in the 24x36mm motion-frames. This is why I decided to go ahead with this complicated and enthusiastic project.”

Dante had been involved with Carl Zeiss on their DigiPrimes project and was able to start production of new re-housed film style lenses called Baby Primes.

There are Carl Zeiss ZF.2 optics inside with full frame coverage for focal lengths of 18 to 100mm. Also included are stainless steel interchangeable mounts with four available – EF, F, E and MFT. There is a consistent front diameter of 95mm so use of lightweight 4×4/4×5, 65 matter boxes and filters.
