Fashion photographer Noor-u-nisa Khan is always on the move, but can’t go without her LaCie Rugged SSD because she knows it won’t let her down

A rising star in fashion, food and editorial photography, Noor-u-nisa Khan’s work has appeared in advertisements and featured in magazines. Known professionally as the surname-less Noorunisa, Khan – like many photographers – “was always into taking pictures,” she says. “You know how in your family, there’s always one person who’s capturing everything? That was me. It was a given that I would study photography.”

Accordingly, she pursued a degree in photojournalism and documentary photography at University of the Arts London, but left feeling like the work was too ‘sad and serious’. After finding street photography at London Fashion Week, she made industry connections, going on to document streetwear in New York, Paris, Milan and Copenhagen – many of the world’s fashion capitals – as well as in the UK.

During London Fashion Week – Khan’s ‘busiest time of the year’ – she’ll endure full days of doing both photo and video. “If I’m shooting for a magazine, they’ll want the pictures in the evening, so when I get home I’ll upload all my images to my hard drive. I travel everywhere with it.”

The LaCie Rugged Pro SSD is an essential item in Khan’s collection, with the Mini model proving especially useful when she’s on the move. “They’re super fast, really compact, so well protected and weatherproof,” she describes. “The worst nightmare for a photographer is that your hard drive isn’t safe. If they have a little knock, they’re still going to work. That’s the main reason I use it,” Khan stresses. “Because they’re so compact – especially the SSD’s – you can pop them in your handbag.”

During particularly busy seasons, Khan often offloads her work to an editor, who sends the photos straight off to the client. “I did a shoot for a perfume brand, and I had a retoucher with me,” she recalls. “It was great to bring my LaCie Rugged Pro SSD and hand it to him.”

While Khan travels with the Rugged USB-C, she keeps her Rugged Pro SSD – which comes in capacities from 1TB to 4TB – nearby. “You don’t want to be carrying loads,” she explains. And because Khan’s work has such variety, she also appreciates that the LaCie Rugged line covers a range of creative scenarios. “It’s perfect for me,” she says.

When it comes to archiving and editing, “I’m often in a situation where somebody will say, ‘Do you have a picture of handbags with charms?’ Then I’ll have to go through the previous fashion weeks, all the past years that I’ve archived,” Khan details. To do this, she uses LaCie’s 2big Dock, a desktop solution that offers even more space and speed. This eases her video workflow too: “The bigger the drive, the better,” she concludes.
