Speed has always been at the heart of experienced image maker Mark Lee-Sing’s work. From his early days shooting World Cup downhill mountain biking and World Championship BMX races to capturing the gritty energy of speedway motorbikes and now the high-octane world of car racing, Lee-Sing has built his name on fast, precise and dynamic content.
But when you work in fast-moving environments, there’s more to success than just what happens behind the camera. The pressure to shoot, edit and deliver on time is relentless – especially when content is being streamed to live audiences around the world. For Lee-Sing, that makes workflow just as important as footage. And at the centre of his on-location kit is a piece of tech that’s as quick and tough as the action: the Samsung Portable SSD T7 Shield.
Speed to rely on
The performance of the Samsung Portable SSD T7 Shield is a game changer for fast-paced production environments where minutes lost waiting for files to download can really hinder workflow. With support for USB 3.2 Gen 2, the portable drive offers sequential read speeds of up to 1050MB/s and write speeds of up to 1000MB/s. In practice, Lee-Sing can offload full camera cards effortlessly, and that means more time capturing what matters and working on edits as rapidly as possible.
“Speed is everything in what I do,” he explains. “I can be filming bikes one minute and editing from the back of my trusty van the next. If I can’t move data quickly, the whole project grinds to a halt. The Samsung Portable SSD T7 Shield keeps everything flowing.”
Lee-Sing doesn’t just use it to store captured footage. The portable drive acts as his mobile production hub on location thanks to this rapid transfer speed. It gives him the power to review, organise and even assemble footage on his laptop before the event is over. That’s vital in his work as the central technical hub for filmmakers and photographers across various live events, including projects for British Speedway, Dirt Store and the Vintage Sports-Car Club.
Tough enough for track days
What sets the Samsung Portable SSD T7 Shield apart from other SSDs is that it isn’t just fast but it’s also built to endure punishing environments. With an IP65 rating, it’s resistant to dust and water, so there’s no fear of failure when working trackside in unpredictable weather. The rubberised outer shell and aluminium unibody construction also make it shock-resistant up to three metres.
“When shooting speedway, everything gets covered in dust. If I accidentally drop the portable drive onto tarmac in a race paddock, it handles everything. It takes away a big worry,” he says.
It also doesn’t take up much space – an important factor when equipment needs to be carried around all day or is at risk of being knocked about in a busy press room, race pits or a TV outside broadcast suite.
As the Samsung Portable SSD T7 Shield is just 88mm long, 59mm wide and 13mm thick – and is a real lightweight at 98g – it is no strain to carry or pack away. The portable drive is compact and packs a lot of horsepower in terms of capacity, with options of 1TB, 2TB and a massive 4TB version available in black.
Security matters
A crucial job of an external SSD is to safely store precious data. But the Samsung Portable SSD T7 Shield goes much further than that as it includes AES 256-bit hardware encryption with optional password protection via Samsung’s Magician software. This magical app also allows the portable drive’s health to be checked, performance to be optimised and the firmware kept up to date.
And whatever device you use, the Samsung Portable SSD T7 Shield just works. It even supports direct recording from some SSD-compatible cameras and includes both USB-C to C and USB-C to A cables straight out of the box. That universal compatibility gives Lee-Sing the flexibility he needs across different set-ups, shooters and workflows.
“No delays, no corrupt files, no excuses – just smooth handoffs and fast results,” he says. “It’s what my clients expect, and that’s what this portable drive delivers.”
For working in fast, unpredictable environments – from race tracks to mountain trails – you can count on the Samsung Portable SSD T7 Shield. It’s fast enough to keep up with 4K and Raw workflows, tough enough to take a beating and still compact.
As Mark Lee-Sing proves, every second matters. And with the right tools, you never miss a moment.
More space from micro SD
There’s nothing that Mark Lee-Sing likes more than having a compact pocket camera with him at all times – even on large-scale shoots when he’s packing seriously big kit. “It’s always useful to have something compact for those quick, off-the-cuff moments,” he says. “Just turn it on and you can start shooting right away, which is especially helpful if you need to record a subject close-up but you have a long lens on your main camera.”
His camera takes SD cards, but he’s now started using Samsung’s Pro Plus micro SD instead, as it’s fast enough and packs a huge 1TB capacity.
With a read speed of 180MB/s and write speed 130MB/s, V30-rated for 4K capture, it’s ideal and stores massive amounts of data with ease.
