Filmmakers are discovering the benefits of the latest virtual production technology at the V Studio, Film Soho’s new stage space hidden in central London

Launched in May, the V Studio, a subdivision of Film Soho, is a 1000 sq ft virtual production space located right in the heart of London. Up to date on vehicle process technology and boasting impressive technical specs across the board, the V Studio aims to make VP far more accessible, affordable and logistically feasible, saving filmmakers valuable time that would otherwise be spent on travel.

“VP is such a wonderful tool in the filmmaker’s tool kit. It can solve all sorts of production challenges – from scheduling and safety to weather, location and often cost too,” begins Kate Phibbs, Film Soho’s head of studio. “The VP approach is rapidly becoming more popular. What was true about VP even just two years ago, in regard to price and logistical complexity, is now not necessarily the case as the technology is refined and processes are streamlined.”

The V Studio offers enough kit to support a full-scale production, including but not limited to an ultra-high-resolution Absen LED wall, Brompton Technology processors, Kino Flo Mimik lights and a  permanent, drive-in revolving stage – ideal for automotive shoots and “fancy orbiting shots,” according to resident VP supervisor, Chris Bouchard. “The LED wall and industry-best image-based lighting are all seamlessly integrated to help crews shoot faster without affecting the DOP’s ability to create gorgeous cinematic images,” Bouchard adds.

The studio has welcomed a diverse client base, from corporate projects and high-end commercials to indie films – most likely down to location. “We find being based in the heart of Soho offers real logistical relief to productions, especially to those already shooting in central London,” Phibbs describes. “The convenience offers weather cover, quick pickups, safe and easy vehicle process and more – all without having to spend hours travelling units out to VP stages located around the M25.”

The V Studio was built by filmmakers for filmmakers, offering a blend of technical precision and flexibility

Designed by and for filmmakers, the V Studio features some of “the simplest and most elegant solutions to production challenges,” according to resident DOP Lucas Tucknott. “What sets us apart is the mix of technical precision and flexibility. We can handle complex sequences, including vehicle shoots with motion tracking and fully integrated LED environments, while keeping the space adaptable.” Plus, by demystifying the entire workflow, the V Studio delivers on its commitment to accessibility.

Since opening, “feedback from DOPs and filmmakers has been very positive,” Tucknott shares. “They value the control over lighting, camera movement and the environment, as well as the studio’s ability to inspire new creative approaches.”
