Based in North Greenwich, the heart of London’s ‘design district’, Ravensbourne University is a specialist, industry-focused institution offering degrees in design, fashion, computing and digital media. With a strong emphasis on employability and career opportunities for its students, the university fosters relationships with creative companies and industry practitioners, as well as ensuring its technology is cutting edge.
As part of its ongoing investment into tech, which is vital for ensuring students keep pace with industry expectations, the university sought to refresh the inventory of cine kit used across its film course and cinematography module. In particular, there was a desire for robust and future-proof tools that could handle the intensity of a higher-education environment, including full, pro-grade camera systems and supporting accessories used in professional productions worldwide.
“We have a very strong track record of preparing students for careers in the media industry,” says Alex Boutellier, senior lecturer of cinematography at Ravensbourne University London. “To maintain that standard, we needed new equipment that would reflect the tools and processes used in professional cinematography settings.”
The perfect partner
Additionally, the Ravensbourne University team wanted a solutions partner that could provide guidance around complex equipment choices, helping to ensure that their money was well spent and their investment delivered maximum long-term value.
Having assessed a number of potential suppliers, Ravensbourne partnered with CVP to invest in RED V-RAPTOR professional-grade digital cinema cameras, within a defined budget, for a full cinema package.
CVP’s technical team designed the solution from the ground up to meet the specific requirements of a demanding university setting. This included hosting in-depth product demonstrations at CVP’s London showroom, at which the Ravensbourne team could get hands- on with camera bodies and accessories, and explore workflow options in great detail. CVP then curated a complete equipment ecosystem, which included rigging, media, power and accessories from leading manufacturers such as ARRI, Bright Tangerine, Octamas and Wooden Camera.
The products were within budget and on time, with CVP supporting the implementation process with comprehensive hands-on training. After a successful rollout, Ravensbourne subsequently acquired two additional RED V-RAPTOR kits, plus ZEISS CP3 lenses, OConnor heads, Ronford sticks and Bright Tangerine matte boxes. This additional procurement process was carried out through a formal tender, which confirmed CVP as a strong partner based on its track record of delivering technical expertise, service and value.
“CVP didn’t just supply us with the equipment we needed; they also guided us through every step of choosing and implementing these vital new tools,” says Boutellier. “Their expertise was invaluable as it ensured we got the best possible set-up for our students within our budget.”
Future-ready
Today, Ravensbourne is increasingly recognised as a centre of excellence for RED Digital Cinema training, helping to reinforce its position as a leading institution for media education. Its students gain high-quality, hands-on experience and standardised training across industry-recognised workflows, maximising the impact of the university’s practical cinematography education.
“With students now training on the same professional tools and workflows used in top-tier productions, including Netflix and Hollywood, they’re fully industry-ready,” enthuses Boutellier.
Backed by comprehensive, hands-on training, the partnership with CVP has also given Ravensbourne long-term clarity for future equipment planning, ensuring they can continue to develop their curriculum with confidence.
“This investment helps sustain Ravensbourne’s strong track record of graduate employability,” concludes Boutellier. “Giving students real-world skills with industry-standard tools ensures they are ready to enter the professional media working environment.
