Testing the EIZO ColorEdge CG3100X

The latest gear, tried and tested by pros

His recent work includes the documentary Red Soil, nominated at Aesthetica and Norwich Film Festivals, the Sony-backed sci-fi short Hestia and the Cannes-screened The Return of the Screw.

The new EIZO ColorEdge CG3100X was tried in a controlled test room environment with a model, lighting and props to gain a realistic and diverse image and put the monitor to the test. The footage was shot on an ARRI ALEXA 35 – a camera known for its top-class colour capabilities and dynamic range at 4.6K 3:2 open gate in ARRIRAW on ZEISS Supreme Primes.

Given the monitor’s primary focus is a post-production display, a live feed was foregone in favour of ingesting the footage into DaVinci Resolve, testing the monitor’s integration into a colour management workflow – and the results were breathtaking!

For those familiar with other monitors in the EIZO ColorEdge range, the CG3100X presents itself as a sleek desktop monitor, with an impressive 30.5-inch 4K HDR display. The CG3100X has the same punched metal and honeycomb back panels as other monitors in the range, which keep the display running cool while also adding a premium finish.

The monitor housing is made of 85% recycled plastic, which flexes when lifted out of the packaging, so handling it with care via the moulded handhold is advised. This is an admirable environmentally conscious decision that ties into the company’s broader ethos around sustainability.

The £4176 (excl. VAT) price tag may initially feel a little steep, but that feeling evaporates when you start evaluating the monitor’s performance.

When powering the monitor, using the familiar capacitive touch buttons, you’re greeted with a lo-fi menu system that is clearly focused on function, allowing you to select input, general menu settings and colour profiles.

Display Performance

The performance of the 30.5-inch 4K DCI HDR display is class leading. EIZO has invested significant R&D into the panel, which offers a high brightness of 500 cd/m², up from 350 cd/m² in the CG319X. The monitor renders images with incredible detail in 4K. Couple this display with the image output of the ALEXA 35 (or any high-end cinema camera) and you are guaranteed accurate results.

Highlights render beautifully and, due to the 1800:1 contrast ratio, the monitor retains detail in shadows and true blacks: a must-have quality. The CG3100X also supports the hybrid log-gamma (HLG) transfer function (a returning feature) and the perceptual quantisation (PQ) curve. All of this culminates in rendering images as close to the human eye as possible, when compared to standard dynamic range. Impressive.

Calibration and Workflow Integration

The CG3100X is equipped with EIZO’s award-winning, built-in calibration sensor technology and ColorNavigator 7 colour management software, which removes the need for any third-party calibration, reduces running costs and increases its value for money.

The monitor includes a Pixel Inspection tool, accessed via the menu. This system lets the user scan any pixel on the screen and check the colour parameters. It is an incredibly useful function, adding an extra layer of confidence when using the monitor for a colour-intensive workload.Additionally, an optional DaVinci Resolve plug-in can automatically switch the monitor to the correct colour profile based on the selected project settings, reducing the risk of user error and helping colourists work with confidence.

Another standout feature is the inclusion of a USB-C port that can be used instead of the HDMI or DisplayPort, as well as powering your machine, up to 94W, effectively reducing your desktop to a two-cable solution, minimising cable management and improving flexibility in a coworking space set-up.

This allows the monitor to slot into a post-production workflow with minimal friction. You can have multiple monitors set up in a room and all users would have to do is plug in their laptops with a single cable.

Additional Features

Other features to look out for include 97% Adobe RGB and 99% DCI-P3 colour space reproduction, 3D LUT for enhanced colour precision, a light-shielding hood and screen uniformity with patented Digital Uniformity Equalizer (DUE) tech. There is a headphone jack for wired audio output as well as DisplayPort and HDMI inputs supporting up to DCI 4K at 60p 4:4:4 10- and 12-bit, respectively.

Final Thoughts

The CG3100X compares favourably in the field of post-production monitors. It boasts class-leading performance in terms of colour and image fidelity, matching and even eclipsing previous iterations in the ColorEdge range.

The monitor’s sleek design is attractive; the 20dB fan runs quietly, while keeping internal components cool; and the tilt- and height-adjustable stand make it ergonomic, letting it be positioned at a comfortable height and angle, with wall mounting options available separately.

All in all, this is another market-leading product for post-production workflow from EIZO.
